The Cycle of Striving
You may remember a time in your career when you felt naturally driven, and your effort made sense because you could see where it was taking you. Success followed, and with it came rewards, validation, and momentum. For a moment, those fruits satisfied you. Soon after, another goal appeared, another level to reach, and the familiar pull returned. That is the cycle of striving. Your achievement leads to relief, relief fades (quickly!), and striving begins again, often without you realizing it has become your default state.
It does not matter whether you are leading a company, building wealth, creating art, or mastering a craft. The pattern is universal. Even when success meets your expectations, obstacles still arise and peace gets disrupted. You may notice yourself protecting what you have, comparing yourself to others, or fearing loss. This is not a mistake or a failure. This is the invitation. When you see the cycle clearly, you have the chance to turn inward, question what is driving you, and transform raw striving energy into compassion, presence, and love. From that place, your drive remains, but it is no longer in conflict with your peace.
Journaling Prompt
Write down one moment from the past week when you noticed yourself striving to win or protecting from loss. Close your eyes, take three slow breaths, and bring that moment to mind. Notice where you feel sensation in your body, what it feels like, and what it might be asking you to see or understand.
Final Thought
“Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.” - Dale Carnegie
As we wrote in Shine, you can be driven and have peace. When you see the cycle clearly and stop being run by it, your drive becomes an expression of your True Self rather than a reaction to fear.
Wishing you lots of joy ♥️
Much love,
