Step on a Crack
When I was a kid, I heard the saying, “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back.” I have no idea who first said it to me, but somehow it stayed with me. I remember being so careful not to step on cracks because, in my young mind, there was a part of me that believed it might actually be true. Of course, as I got older, I understood that stepping on a crack was not going to hurt my mother. And yet, on a run this morning, I stepped on a crack in the sidewalk and that old saying came to mind. I even felt a small reaction in my body. Isn’t that amazing? Decades later, something so simple was still stored in my body and emotions, even if only a little.
This is what some refer to as an emotional imprint. Something happens, is said, or is felt deeply, and it gets stored in you. Even when your mind knows better, the energy in your body holds on to it. For a driven person (you!), these stored feelings can shape your decisions, your reactions, and the way you lead. You may not even realize how much of your outer-world striving is connected to something that was formed long ago.
The invitation is not to judge it, but to notice it. What is your version of “step on a crack, break your mother’s back”? When you begin to see these imprints clearly, you create space. And in that space, your True Self has more room to SHINE!
Journaling prompt
What emotional imprint from earlier in your life still shows up in your body, your thoughts, or your behavior today? What might become possible if you noticed it with compassion instead of letting it quietly run the show?
Final Thought
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” - paraphrased from Carl Jung
Wishing you lots of joy!
