Patience
Most driven people I know are not very patient. That might be you… or it might not. Either way, I have learned that patience is a practice. Just like a sport or an instrument. It feels like life gives me opportunities to practice it almost every day.
Travel has been one of my greatest teachers. I live in northern Michigan, and when I moved there in 2020, I underestimated how inconvenient it would be to get places. We are four hours from the nearest major airport. There is a small regional airport nearby, but it can be unreliable. I tried every strategy I could think of to make travel faster and more predictable. Still, something always seemed to happen. Weather delays. Late arrivals that caused missed connections. Even a stretch of weeks when the airport did not have a working de-icing machine and flights were canceled.
Eventually, I stopped fighting it. I began to practice patience instead of trying to control every variable. Of course I still plan carefully and create the best schedule I can. The difference now is my mindset. I choose to move with life rather than push against it. I let go. I pay attention. I try to enjoy the journey to wherever I am headed.
